ABSN Prerequisites

Before you can get started in Northeastern University’s Boston or Charlotte-based Accelerated BSN program, not only do you have to have a non-nursing bachelor’s degree, you must also satisfy eight prerequisite course requirements. These prerequisites lay the foundation for your success when completing our rigorous accelerated nursing curriculum, while also being key to nursing career preparedness.

Note that you don’t have to have all of the prerequisites completed before applying to the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. As long as you’ve satisfied six of the course requirements and have registered for the final two, you can submit an application to our School of Nursing.

List of ABSN Prerequisite Courses

As a condition of enrollment in our second-degree nursing program, these prerequisites ensure you have the preliminary knowledge that’s required to complete professional nursing study. Not to mention, if you’ve been out of the college environment for a while, your prerequisites can help ease you back into student mode.

You must earn a grade of “C” or higher in each of the following prerequisite courses:

Microbiology + Lab*4 credits
Human Anatomy & Physiology I + Lab*4 credits
Human Anatomy & Physiology II + Lab*4 credits
Introduction to Chemistry + Lab*4 credits
Statistics (inferential stats and hypothesis testing)3 credits
Social/Behavioral Sciences (100 level or above)3 credits
Developmental Psychology (lifespan)3 credits
Nutrition3 credits

*These science-based prerequisites must have been completed within 10 years of your ABSN program start date. Because so much has changed in nursing over the past decade, we want every student to enter the program on a level playing field. You’ll also find that an updated understanding of the sciences leads to greater success in nursing school.

Transfer of Credits

Depending on your previous degree, you may have already satisfied some of these prerequisite requirements. Your admissions counselor can tell you if you have any past credits that are transferable.

While you can complete any of the eight ABSN prereqs through our university, we also accept course credits from other higher learning institutions as long as they align with our requirements.

If you have specific questions about whether or not your credits may transfer, contact an admissions counselor.
