The upcoming Boston Marathon on April 21, 2014 is a time for Bostonians as well as runners, families and spectators from around the world alike to celebrate the beautiful city of Boston and its community as they travel together from Hopkinton to downtown Boston. This year’s marathon is especially distinct because of the heartbreaking events that happened just one year ago at the marathon. Now is the time to remember and comfort those affected by the tragic bombing that took place April 15, 2013. It is a time to join together and stand Boston Strong. It is a time to feel pride in Boston.
We at Northeastern University feel immense pride in our city and our students. We are proud to be in a city that withstood such violence and proud to be a part of a community that stands together and prevails against adversity. We at Northeastern University School of Nursing are especially proud of our students. Northeastern University nursing students were among the first responders last April.
At the 111th Northeastern University Commencement for the Class of 2013, Northeastern President Joseph E. Aoun remarked on the extraordinary students who were among the first to answer the call at the finish line in April of 2013. He praised the student’s ability to take the lessons learned at Northeastern University and save lives, stating that, “Education allows us to meet challenges we haven’t even conceived.” There was no doubt that pride was beating in the hearts of those graduates as well as all Northeastern University students and alumni. In closing, Aoun said, “No matter where your individual path leads, I know you will carry this university, and this city, forever in your hearts. All of us will remain ‘Northeastern Together’ and ‘Boston Strong.’”
Northeastern University has since started a community project for students and members of the community affected by the tragedy. Northeastern University is the host of Our Marathon, a digital archive and oral history project of the Boston bombing. If you were affected by the bombings last year, we encourage you to share your story on the Our Marathon Archive Community Project hosted by Northeastern University. You can also read stories, poems, see art and pictures and more.
At this year’s Boston Marathon, we hope you will join fellow Bostonians, Northeastern University and the rest of the world as we stand Boston Strong.
